Mellissa Fung's TVO Original CAPTIVE nominated at the 2022 Real Screen Awards in Austin, TX

Toronto, Canada – November 30, 2021 – The Real Screen Awards announced today that Captive, an Antica Productions’ 2021 documentary, has been nominated in the Non-Fiction – Social Issues & Current Affairs Program category.

The Realscreen Awards pay tribute to outstanding content from around the world at the industry’s global celebration of excellence in non-fiction and unscripted entertainment.  The 12th annual ceremony will take place during Realscreen Summit, at the JW Marriott Austin, Texas on January 26, 2022.

Winners will be awarded in 22 genre-specific categories that will go forward for the chance to win one of our grand prize Awards of Excellence, honouring the best programs entered into each of our five main categories: Competition, Lifestyle, Reality, Non-Fiction, and Short-Form Content.  Also to be presented is the Diversity & Inclusion Award.

CAPTIVE is a powerful, personal journey of surviving the physical and psychological pain and trauma of captivity and the toll conflict takes on women and girls. Filmed over four years and several high-risk trips into north eastern Nigeria, writer and director Mellissa Fung meets several brave young women who have escaped imprisonment by Boko Haram and who are now trying to rebuild their lives. Through their struggles, Fung comes to terms with her own past, confronting the deep trauma she thought she had long buried. CAPTIVE premiered on TVO on February 16, 2021.

About Mellissa Fung

Mellissa Fung is a veteran journalist, best-selling author, filmmaker, and director. She has traveled the world producing original documentaries for Al-Jazeera International, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), and other media outlets.  She covered the war in Afghanistan for the CBC, leading to her best-selling first book, Under an Afghan Sky, which chronicles her experience as a hostage after she was kidnapped while on assignment in Kabul in 2008. Over the last several years, Fung has focused on human rights reporting, returning to Afghanistan several times to continue reporting on the challenges that continue to exist there, particularly for women and children.
